The roundtable is part of ESCWA's regional preparatory activities towards the second phase of the WSIS. The outcome was considered at the 2nd Western Asia Preparatory Conference for WSIS to be held in Damascus (November 2004, see above).

The roundtable was followed by the 6th Session of the Statistical Committee of ESCWA (6-8 October 2004). The roundtable also aimed to fulfil the objectives of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, in particular taking inventory of Information Society statistics in the ESCWA region. Heads and representatives of National Statistics Offices of ESCWA member countries were expected to attend, as well as representatives from the entities forming the Partnership, and ICT, statistics, and other experts.
