The main activities of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development have been in the development of ICT indicators, capacity-building and contributions to the WSIS.

First phase: 2004-2005

The first phase of Partnership activities lasted from 2004 to WSIS Tunis in 2005. It focused on raising awareness among policymakers of the importance of statistical indicators for monitoring ICT policies and carrying out impact analysis. Several technical workshops for developing countries were held at the regional level. The most important outcome of this first phase was the agreement of a first core list of ICT indicators. The Partnership also obtained the inclusion of indicators in the WSIS process.

Second phase: 2006-present

The second phase started in 2006 and focuses on:

• Building statistical capacities through technical material, courses and workshops;
• Developing ICT in education indicators;
• Developing ICT in government indicators;
• Developing a global database.

The Partnership will also continue to raise awareness at the political level about the importance of ICT measurement for policymaking and evaluation. It will seek further dissemination of the core list of ICT indicators.

• July 2007, Signature of MoU by the 10 Partners, in which they agreed to expand their joint efforts to help developing countries compile reliable, comparable ICT statistics.
• June 2007, Capacity-Building Workshop on Information Society Measurements for Arab countries, jointly organized by UNESCWA, UNCTAD, Arab Regional Office of the ITU, and the OECD, Cairo, Egypt.
• March 2007, Joint ITU-UNCTAD-UNECA Regional Workshop on Information Society Measurement in Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

• November 2005 WSIS Parallel Event on "Measuring the Information Society" in Tunis. The outcome was reported to the Summit Plenary, and the WSIS Tunis outcome recognized the work of the Partnership
• November 2005 Launch at WSIS Tunis of the Partnership publications "Core ICT Indicators" and "Measuring ICT: The Global Status of ICT Indicators"
